Bangkok overwhelms you with sights, sounds and smells. It is one of the most exotic places to visit in SE Asia - hands down. This is big destination for three reasons: culture, beaches and partying. One can find anything in Bangkok - from beatiful Grand Palace and Thai dancing performances through the great beaches to every possible type of nightlife.

Getting to Thailand

The gateway city to Thailand is Bangkokg (airport code: BKK). All major US carriers have flights to Thailand, the flight time is about 16-17 hours from SFO
The cheapest tickets 75% of the time are found directly on airline web sites, especially if your itinerary is flexible   Other 25% of time Expedia, Travelocity or Orbitz  will have a combination of different carrier flights that ends up being cheaper.
Expect to pay about $1200-1500RT
Option to consider when travelling to Bangkok - book yourself roundtrip limo service and express pass through airport custom/passport controls. About US$100, well worth it to skip the 60+ minute arrivals wait, especially after 16 hour flight.

General Pointers

  1. Avoid driving!
  2. Credit cards are accepted very widely.
  3. Your one-stop place for info and tours -

Local Transportation

The best mode of local transport within Thailand are taxis. Use official taxis only, always insist on using taxi meter. It will always be cheaper than "negotiated" rate, which is always a rip-off. Make sure hotel concierge verifies that taxi driver knows where he is going. Ask hotel to provide you with hotel business card listing all major destinations. This is critical also to be able to get BACK to hotel. Bangkok could give a new meaning to traffic jam - do not attempt to drive yourself. Take metro if you can.

Places to stay

The best and most convenient place to stay is close to Lumpini Park. The hands-down favorite - Intercontinental Bangkok, check out the view below, or visit the hotel website.
